The Truth About Golf Posture

Maintaining proper posture during a golf swing is essential for maximizing performance and preventing injury. The golf swing requires a combination of strength, flexibility and coordination and having good posture is a key component executing a consistent and powerful swing. A loss of posture during your golf swing can result in all sorts of mishits including thin shots, fat shots, shots to the right and shots to the left.

The position that a golfer holds their body at set up would be a golfers posture. This includes a stable lower body with slight knee flex and a hinge at the hip joint that tilts the golfers upperbody forward towards the ground while keeping the spine straight or mostly straight. When done properly, the golfers arms will hang down from their shoulders to allow them to grip the club and reach the ground with the clubhead.

During the golf swing, the goal is to maintain that forward flexion while your body rotates on the backswing and then back to impact. When done properly, the golfers spine angle will remain pretty consistent despite all of this rotation. Think of the spine as the axis that the body rotates around. Ideally the shoulders will rotate at a right angle to this axis until about halfway into the follow through. Keep in mind that a human spine is designed to allow flexion (forward) and extension (backwards) in addition to rotation ineach direction and side bend right and left. With this in mind, it makes sense why it is often difficult to maintain the same amount of spine tilt while your hips and shoulders are rotating so fast.

In my experience, those that struggle to maintain their posture often lack mobility, strength, or both mobility and strength. In this case you should find a fitness professional that is certified by the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) and have them assess you physically to develop a plan to work on these limitations.

In conclusion, maintaining proper posture during a golf swing is essential for maximizing performance and preventing injury. Work on a quality set up to By following these key points, you can ensure that you have a solid foundation for executing a consistent and powerful swing, which will help you enjoy the game of golf to its fullest.
